Until this occurs, the unique X10 gets a unique software update that won’t change the version of Android it’s running. Instead, the update “makes a speciality of improving the final performance, speed and responsiveness” and brings a free back up and restore app.

Starting today, the firmware update for the X10 is live in “selected markets” (SE doesn’t say which markets exactly). The updated shall be gradually rolled-out in all markets over a better few weeks.

The software update is remodeled the air (OTA), so X10 owners will receive a message within the notification bar when it’s available. Alternatively, users can take a look at www.sonyericsson.com/update to accomplish the update via a computer.

The economy isn’t going to keep Sony Ericsson from cranking out ridiculously expensive, high-end dumb phones for the high-class crowd. One of its latest, the Pureness, will now be available through Saks or Sony Cierge for a whopping, or mere, depending on who you are, $990. What do you get for that kind of cash? Talk, text and time. That’s right — just the basics and that is exactly how SE is advertising this thing, but it also comes with a 24-hour global concierge service “providing its members support for all lifestyle requests.” The clear screen and keypad light up with info only when buttons are pushed, which makes it look like a sleek, artsy gadget when not in use. If we had to choose, we’d be saving up for a whole different high-end line of handsets…

We’ve seen and heard about the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 since we were about X10 years old. A few short weeks ago the company held events to showcase the phone and we already knew it was coming 1st quarter 2010… although Sony Ericsson initially (and accidentally) let slip a February 10th release date. So why does Play.com have the device for pre-order with a January 18th, 2010 release date for £529.99 ($860)?

Play.com is no teeny-tiny retailer so they must know what they’re talking about… right? Do they know something we don’t? Did they slip-up? How quickly will this be pulled – or will it?

There are plenty of Droids to ensure a happy holiday season but I’m guessing lots of New Years Resolutions will be resolving to purchase the Xperia X10. Start saving cost this isn’t a cheap catch.

Remember the Sony Ericsson handset codenamed Susan, that was thought to accompany the X10 as the new Android phones of the company? Now, it turns out that this will be a simple dumbphone, known as the J10 and being part of the GreenHeart line, which makes it eco-friendly.

SE J10 will sport a QVGA display, WiFi, a 5 megapixel camera with Flash and it’ll be made out of eco-friendly materials. Its charger will also feature a pretty low consumption and if you’re wondering about the price and launch date, they’re mysteries right now.

L.M Ericsson Telephone Company unexpectedly announced on Tuesday that it is laying off almost 1,000 employees in its native Sweden due to a 74% drop in net profits one quarter back. Ericsson is reportedly closing operations in the town of Gävle, a design and manufacturing facility that employs 856 people. They’re also slashing almost 9% of the workforce in the Borås facility, laying off 90 of the 1,037 employees. It is not surprising that much of this loss is attributed to falling sales with  its joint venture with Sony. With software problems plaguing Sony Ericsson’s flagship Satio and both the upcoming Sony Ericsson X2 and X10 reportedly not slated for launch until 2010, things might be looking worse before they look better.Read

A couple of days ago we informed you that Sony Ericsson Satio was pulled from a bunch of British retailers, because of some software issues and following it was the Aino model. Now, the 12 megapixel cameraphone is back on sale, with a software update to correct the issues.

Very few details on the update have been released, except for the fact that it’ll enhance handset speed and battery usage. UK’s Phones4u is already selling the updated version of the phone right now, if you’re interesting and they even claim that the sales were pretty strong over the past weekend.

Google still has a ways to go in Europe where Symbian reigns supreme. Although Europeans easily recognize the Google brand, Android itself is still pretty foreign to them. It’s not surprising since there aren’t many Android offerings there, but numbers are still below expectations. At the end of the third quarter, Android’s market share in Western Europe was at 5.4%. “The lack of devices available didn’t help to raise awareness, though this is expected to change, with more handsets from LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and other vendors hitting the market soon,” says IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo. Right now, Nokia and Symbian are still at the top spot for Western Europe, but Samsung is surprisingly getting close to overtaking Nokia. How many of our European pals out there are using Android devices?

There is word floating around that Sony Ericsson is planning on two variants of the XPERIA X10. While it’s far from confirmed, it appears as though SE’s plan of teaming with U.S. carriers to subsidize this bad boy is working out. Both versions will have 3G support for their respective carriers, which means the T-Mobile version will have support for the 1700MHz band. SE is also saying it plans to have this phone out in early 2010, so we’ll find out sooner than later. We’re just wondering what pricing will be like since this device will have to be heavily subsidized to come down from its $700+ price tag. Hit the jump for some device specs.

When it rains, it pours, and for Sony Ericsson, this week has been one big torrential downpour. Earlier  we reported on the Sony Ericsson Satio which has been pulled from the shelves of the UK’s two major retailers due to a software glitch. Only a few days later, sales of the Sony Ericsson Aino were halted due to a growing number of customer complaints with the touchscreen. Once again, the source of the complaints was traced back to a glitch in the software. Trying to minimize this public relations nightmare, Sony Ericsson responded by saying “We are working as quickly as we can to solve it. Aino has sold limited numbers in the UK and this issue affects a very small number of consumers.” The promise of a future software fix is little consolation to Aino owners affected by this glitch and a thorn to angry stockholders who must be shaking their heads in utter disbelief.

Remember when we announced that Sony Ericsson Satio and Nokia N97 were pulled back from some of the retailers selling them in the UK? Now, it turns out that Sony Ericsson Aino also has some serious issues, so it’ll suffer the same treatment.

The info comes via Reuters and we’ve learned that Aino has some problems with the touchscreen, that make it inoperable. Sony Ericsson is working to solve these issues, maybe via software updates, but know that this problem only affects a small number of customers in Britain. This remains a big blow towards the image of SE, specially now in the holiday season.

All of these issues come just as Sony Ericsson reported a 199 million euro loss in Q3 and the lack of profit ever since Q1 2008.
