Nokia hints at new C-Series handsets, official announcement at CeBIT?

Sunday 28 February 2010 @ 3:48 pm

nokia-newsletter-c-series

Nokia, as part of its Conversations blog, is circulating an email newsletter which hints at some new handsets. The sidebar story mentions the rumored C-Series devices, discusses the upcoming deliberately misspelled “C BIT” conference and tells its fans that Nokia will “C you there”. Don’t start dreaming of a 12 megapixel, Symbian S^3 powered flagship quite yet as the C-Series is expected to be comprised of entry level handsets. Indeed, the first handset in the lineup is rumored to be the C5, a numeric keypad-toting candybar, and the C6, which is rumored to be a front-facing QWERTY handset that recently passed through the FCC with AT&T 3G on board. Hopefully, this shameless self-promotion was just a teaser and when CeBIT starts next Tuesday will we see Nokia handsets from both ends of the spectrum get the official nod.

Thanks, Glenn!

Download Free Space Impact – Meteor Shield for your N97

Sunday 28 February 2010 @ 3:45 am

Created free for Nokia N97 mini and N97 users, the Space Impact – Meteor Shield is now available on Ovi Store, utilizing built in digital compass sensor for the game control. More about the game here

The concept for Space Impact: Meteor Shield is a simple arcade affair – you’re planet Earth’s last hope, and are tasked with taking the controls of a gun turret to protect the world from incoming showers of meteors and alien hordes. Holding the device upright, with the screen parallel to the ground, you control the turret by rotating the phone on its vertical axis, as if you were sat in the hot seat spinning on the spot – never before has the digital compass sensor been used in a game, so it’s great to see it find an effective and suitable home here. As you spin around you get bombarded by incoming attackers that you’re able to fend off by tapping the touchscreen to shoot.

What Android Phones Will Get Flash 10.1?

Saturday 27 February 2010 @ 8:39 pm

This image has no alt text

adobeThe entire Android-loving public has been waiting for Flash 10.1 support on our beloved Android phones like the Droid and the Nexus One. Some lucky users of select handsets like the HTC Hero and Motorola Devour are graced with Flash Lite, but that has its fair share of limitations. So as we desperately wait for Adobe to bring Flash onboard, who will and won’t be getting a ticket to ride?

A post on the Adobe forums suggests it won’t be decided exactly how we thought:

Hi all,

You can expect the final release for Android to be available mid-year. All Android devices that meet our minimum s/w and h/w requirements will be supported. Unfortunately, I cannot say a lot more publicly about our port to the Android platform at this time.

As for WinMo, we have made the tough decision to defer support for that platform until WinMo7. This is due to the fact that WinMo6.5 does not support some of the critical APIs that we need.

As for your other questions:

* Yes, we will support the Motorola Milestone.
* No, the HTC Hero will not be supported b/c it does not have the correct Anroid OS version and it’s chipset is not powerful enough. We require a device with an ARM v7 (Cortex) processor. Examples include the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets and TI OMAP3 series.

Best regards,
Antonio

Antonio is an Adobe employee and this suggests something different than what we may have assumed – just because a handset is upgraded to Android 2.0 DOES NOT mean it will be eligible for Flash 10.1 and in fact, many phones won’t be able to enjoy Flash 10.1 regardless of OS updates. In addition to requiring Android 2.0, each phone will also require a minimum processor spec.

Taylor from AndroidAndMe did a little research and made a list of US phones that, based on this information (and assuming its true), will not ever have Flash 10.1 capabilities:

  • Sprint Hero
  • Sprint Moment
  • T-Mobile G1
  • T-Mobile myTouch 3G
  • T-Mobile CLIQ
  • T-Mobile Behold II
  • Verizon Droid Eris
  • Verizon Devour

What a shame, what a shame. Hopefully they’ll at least release it to those ready, willing and able by the first half of 2010 as they’ve promised. And hopefully we can have some more clarification on exactly what phones will and won’t enjoy Flash in the future. Afterall, there are people making purchase decisions NOW based on what features their phone might have in a few months from now. We just want some transparency so we can make informed buying decisions!

Nexus One to launch on Vodafone UK in April?

Saturday 27 February 2010 @ 8:30 pm

Google-Nexus-One-51

Good news for UK wireless customers as the Daily Telegraph is reporting that the Google Nexus One is slated for an April launch on Vodafone UK. Originally announced back in January, the Nexus One was expected to launch with Vodafone in the Spring of 2010 with Vodafone reportedly hoping to get the handset out the door in March. Inside sources have reportedly told the Daily Telegraph that the March date is most likely off the table and April is a much more realistic time frame for launch. Such a date is not surprising as April is a pivotal month in the Spring season and fits perfectly with Google’s original projection. Let’s hope similar inside sources inside the US will be as loose lipped as their UK counterparts and will soon share the launch date for either the Verizon Wireless or the AT&T Nexus One. You know where to go if you are feeling rather talkative.

CDMA Nexus One Passes FCC

Saturday 27 February 2010 @ 8:16 pm

Lending more credibility to the potential March 23rd launch of Verizon’s Nexus One is the fact that it has recently passed the FCC – or at least a Verizon compatible version has passed.

Tremendously good news for non-hardware-keyboard fans waiting on Big Red to release the current beast of the bots. If it all comes together, you’ve only got a tad more than 3-weeks of waiting.
